RWE tests new energy plants to produce biogas in the Rhinland (Germany)

5/28/2013

RWE plants 160,000 new energy plants on two recultivation areas in the Garzweiler opencast mine. The "Durchwachsene Silphie“ (Silphium perfoliatum) will be tested as an alternative raw material for the production of biogas. The aim is to use the plants in the RWE biogas facilities in Neurath and in the future also in Bergheim-Paffendorf. This includes comparison of gas yield and biogas quality with other energy plants. In addition, maintenance effort, yield per unit area and ecological benefits of Silphie will be investigated. The Cologne office for faunistics guides accompanies the research project, which is set up for three years.
