Choice between electricity and biogas for northern trains (NL)

4/28/2014

The provinces of Groningen and Friesland have substantial ambitions when it comes to sustainability. They are therefore looking at how to make rail transport more sustainable. The research firm Movares was commissioned by the provincial authorities to investigate various options; it concluded that the most sustainable solutions for trains in the north was to run them on electricity or biogas. According to Movares, full electrification of the 270 kilometres of track would be the best option. However, that would require substantial investments, as installing overhead wires costs about 1 million Euros per kilometre of track. Biogas would be another option, and this would require investment in fuelling stations.
